Anthony Scully scored on his Exeter City debut to condemn Rotherham to a 1-0 defeat at St James Park on Saturday. The result leaves Rotherham 17th in League Two with 10 points from nine games, a position that deepens concerns over their early-season form.

Scully, announced as a Grecians signing that morning, settled the contest six minutes after half-time, scoring the winner in the 51st minute. Charlie Cummins set up George Birch, whose cross was turned in from close range by the new arrival. Rotherham goalkeeper Julian Eyestone had earlier made a good save from Josh Gordon and saw Ethan Sutherland smash a volley against his post late on, but his own side offered little threat. The Millers failed to test Exeter's keeper with any of their seven attempts, their best opening seeing a Marvin Kaleta cross evade top scorer Paul Mullin.

Dominic Iorfa was booked for the visitors, who made three second-half substitutions in search of an equaliser. Tom Bradshaw, Aaron Nemane and Kian Spence all entered the fray, but a stoppage-time chance to snatch a point went begging. The defeat is Rotherham's third in nine league outings this term, with Mullin's four goals their primary source of comfort.

Rotherham must now regroup for their next fixture, a home match against Gillingham on Saturday, 21 September.
