Matt Taylor, the former Rotherham United manager, is currently in talks regarding the vacant manager's role at Exeter City. Having previously led the Millers, Taylor is now weighing a permanent return to St James Park, where he has been in interim charge since March. His past experience, including his tenure at Rotherham, will be crucial in his decision-making process for the Grecians.

Taylor took over at Exeter after Gary Caldwell departed for Wigan Athletic. He is tasked with securing Exeter City's League One survival on the final day of the season. The Devon side needs a victory against play-off hopefuls Bradford City and hopes Leyton Orient fails to beat Burton Albion to ensure a fifth successive season in the third tier.

Speaking to BBC Radio Devon, Taylor expressed his affection for the club. "One thing which being back here in this short period has reminded me of is what a special club this is," he stated. He acknowledged the financial difficulties Exeter faces, which will necessitate reliance on young academy players, a challenge he feels well-equipped to handle.

Taylor's managerial journey saw him lead Exeter City to promotion from League Two in 2022. Following this success, he left to take the helm at Rotherham United. After his spell with Rotherham, he also managed Bristol Rovers before returning to Exeter for his current interim role, where he has overseen the last 12 games.

Under Taylor's recent interim leadership, Exeter's form has improved significantly. After losing five of his first six games, the team has been beaten just once in their subsequent six matches, scoring nine goals in their last four. Taylor emphasized that his decision will involve listening to the club, close confidantes, and his own intuition, despite initially deeming a long-term role "unlikely."

Exeter City faces an uphill battle for survival on Saturday. Having won only once since late January, they must secure three points to have any chance of staying in the division. Their position has slipped considerably since being 10th in League One after a victory at Port Vale on January 24th.
