Rotherham United are set to appoint Mat Sadler as their new head coach, the club has revealed. The 41-year-old has been in talks with the Millers' hierarchy after their pursuit of Ian Burchnall foundered earlier this week. Sadler, a former Millers player, has been out of work since being sacked by Walsall in March after a run of just one win in 11 matches. He spent three years as head coach of the Saddlers, leading them to an 11th-placed finish in League Two in 2024 and taking them to the Play-off Final in 2025. The Millers' need for an appointment is pressing, with the start of pre-season training just three weeks away. Steve McClaren, the club's head of football, wants Sadler to work under him as Rotherham attempt to rebuild following their relegation to League Two. Sadler made 575 appearances in a long career that began at Birmingham City in 2002 and ended in 2022 at Walsall. He joined the Millers in 2014 during Steve Evans' first reign as manager but played only once before going on loan to Crawley Town and Oldham Athletic and then joining Shrewsbury Town on a permanent deal in 2015.
